How The High Cost Of Fuel Is Affecting Truck Drivers

Fuel costs keep rising every week and it doesn’t look like it is stopping any time soon. The high cost of fuel affects all drivers everywhere, it means some people will curb their driving somewhat, while other drivers may discontinue driving altogether. But by far the people that are hit the hardest by the continued rising cost of fuel are owner-operator truck drivers.

When a truck driver drives as an employee of a business, then the cost of fuel is paid for by the company. When the truck is owned by the driver, then the cost of the fuel comes right out of the truck driver’s pocket. This is just one more added expense that in most cases the driver can not pass on to his customers. The negative impact of the high cost of the fuel is inflicted for the most part singularly on the driver himself.

Some of the problems that the high cost of fuel has led to in the trucking industry are lessening the safety and stability of the industry as a whole. If drivers are unable to pass on the cost of the fuel they use, then they have to find other ways to remain profitable while continuing to do their job delivering goods around the country. There are two main examples of how this can be done. The first is by driving longer hours. By driving longer hours, the driver can squeeze in more deliveries per week or month and end up increasing the income, but sacrificing much needed rest that can lead to having drivers on the road who are suseptible to exhibiting signs of exhaustion. The second way that drivers can try and remain profitable is also not recommended. Drivers can attempt to stay profitable by counteracting the cost of fuel by delaying or doing fewer required maintenance procedures on their trucks. Both of these options that many drivers feel they are being forced to
choose from lead to unsafe roadways, filling the nation’s highways with drivers that are too tired to be on the road or trucks that are mechanically not safe enough to be on the road is no way to operate an industry.

While the rising cost of fuel affects us all, the effect is has on the nation’s independent truck drivers has become devastating. Forcing normally attentive and safe drivers to make decisions they would not normally make is one of the worst things that has resulted from the high price of fuel. The only way this situation can be changed is by a drastic change in the fuel industry, without that the pain of the pump will continue to be felt most by the nation’s truck drivers.
